Dec 29, 2023

Former New Bedford interim Fire Chief Paul Coderre, from Dartmouth, was shot and killed in a shooting in Fairhaven on Friday, Dec. 29. An Acushnet officer was shot and injured during the incident.

In a press conference after the shooting, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said the Coderre “had been drinking in the lounge during the afternoon and was purported to be intoxicated.” Quinn said Coderre got into an altercation inside the bar, and then left and attempted to get into his vehicle. Police tried to subdue Coderre, who was carrying a gun, through non-lethal methods, but we’re unsuccessful.

“At some point, he fired his gun, police returned fire and as a result of that, Paul Coderre died,” Quinn said.

Officers from the Acushnet and Mattapoisett Police Department also responded to the call along with Fairhaven Police. An Acushnet officer was shot by Codorre and sent to the hospital, and has since recovered, Quinn said.

The incident is under investigation.
