Student cited for April death of UMass Dartmouth freshman

Bristol County District Attorney’s Office filed a citation with the New Bedford District Court’s office Tuesday afternoon to the student driving the vehicle that struck and killed UMass Dartmouth student Frank Petillo Jr.

The citation would potentially charge the driver with negligent motor vehicle homicide. Within about a month, the clerk magistrate will review the citation and decide whether there is “probable cause” to charge the student, said Gregg Miliote, Director of Communications for the District Attorney’s Office.

At that point, an arraignment date will be set and the name of the driver will be released, though WVCB in Boston previously reported from police records that student Danasia Sampson was driving the vehicle.

Petillo was struck by the vehicle on campus on April 6. He was found lying on Ring Road with significant injuries and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead

After the incident, students called for increased safety measures on Ring Road, which circles the UMass Dartmouth campus. Chancellor Mark Fuller promised changes shortly afterwards. Since then, campus police said they have added 10 speed bumps, more speed signage, additional patrol calls and raised crosswalks. Temporary concrete barriers were also installed to protect sidewalks.
