Proclamations for suicide prevention month, 9/11 anniversary

Wareham Select Board recognized September as Suicide Prevention Month and designated September 10 as Suicide Prevention Day for the town at its meeting Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Judith Whiteside read the board’s proclamation at the meeting, complete with the sobering statistics that suicide is the 10th most frequent cause of U.S. deaths and third leading cause among those aged 15-24. The proclamation read that suicide is a public health concern, and many suicides are preventable.
Local efforts for suicide prevention include building suicide prevention infrastructure at the local and state levels, the proclamation said.
The board also recognized “Patriot Day” on Sept. 11— the 25th anniversary of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade towers in New York.
Whiteside read: “100 million Americans are too young to remember the day that changed our nation forever…On this 25th anniversary, let us recapture and reignite that spirit of unity by displaying our nation’s flags all across our beautiful town.”
On a lighter note later in the meeting, Whiteside noted that the Cape Cod Baseball League — summer home for some of the best collegiate ball players in the country and future major league stars — will celebrate its centennial this year.Wareham, whose Gatemen are the only off-Cape team to have a team in the league, has been selected to host the centennial All-Star Game in 2027.
